Grade 1 Explores Expressing Identity through the Visual Arts

Greetings from Visual Arts!

During Unit 1 – Who We Are, students have been using their knowledge to create wonderful original works of art and learning new concepts. They are following lines of inquiry to create many new works of art that demonstrate their new and prior knowledge in the classroom! First grade has been learning more about expressing their identities through their artwork. Students began by discussing the concept of identity as introduced by their awesome homeroom teachers. Students reflected on how to express their identities through visual drawings and symbols. Students looked at different artists and how they express themselves visually. Students created symbols and drawings that reflected their interests, hobbies, dreams for the future, and also depicted what was important to them. One student identified that thinking, caring, and helping are important elements of her identity. Another drew an image of a lego to represent playing legos with his brother – and that his brother is important to him. Many students chose favorite activities, foods, and delved even deeper into the concept of identity by using the learner attributes. For example, students drew images to show that knowledge, being caring, and communicating were important aspects of their identity. The importance of family was also an overarching theme with our students.

After creating symbols, students learned to draw block letters. Using the first letter of their name, they incorporated their symbols into their “Identity Letter”. Students used markers to color their images and worked on improving fine motor skills and using emphasis as an element of design.

The culminating activity of this unit was an “Expressive Silhouette”. Students learned what silhouettes are within the context of creating art, and were able to identify images which were silhouettes and which were not. Students then used mixed media (markers, watercolor, and special materials). to create their creative self portraits. These portraits began with students drawing or tracing a silhouette of their face from the side. Then, students reflected on how their ideas about identity may have changed since the beginning of the unit and were encouraged to think about future dreams and goals and who they want to be in the future. They drew symbols and scenes in their silhouette and added the element of design. Their knowledge of their own identity, and depth of exploration was represented in their final projects and reflections about their art. It’s no surprise that all the students enjoyed the glitter and shine! In conclusion, students successfully demonstrated their knowledge through the inquiry process and created works of art that were reflective and expressive. Look for their work soon to be displayed! Congratulations, Grade 1 – well done!
