Welcome to ISD Primary school

At ISD Primary, we are proud of our IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), which provides students with opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge needed for long-term academic success. The PYP emphasizes conceptual understanding, fostering a foundation that helps students become lifelong learners.

Our highly qualified and experienced grade level and specialist teachers promote student agency by nurturing voice, choice, and responsibility in learning. We believe that when students actively engage in their learning, they become more adaptable, responsible, and develop both a deeper understanding and a love of learning.

Our curriculum is grounded in internationally benchmarked standards, including the IB PYP subject guides and the Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) standards. Subjects taught include Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Literacy (reading, writing, speaking, listening), Personal, Social and Physical Education, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Design. Additionally, the school promotes the development of social-emotional literacy and digital citizenship.

Learning at ISD extends beyond the classroom through local field trips and overnight excursions in Bangladesh for Grades 4 and 5. Students also enjoy a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, from sports, athletics, and swimming to the Primary Production and many other activities.

All of our academic, social-emotional, and extracurricular programs are designed to reflect and uphold our core school values: Kindness, Well-being, and Responsibility. Our faculty and staff are deeply committed to supporting students’ personal growth, academic achievement, and individual passions.

Whether you are a current or prospective member of our community, we warmly welcome you to ISD Primary.

I am sure your connection with ISD primary will be a positive one and we look forward to working in partnership with you.

Primary Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) prepares our young students, from the ages 6 to 11, to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in and contribute to the world around them. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both within and beyond the classroom.

Primary School Overview

Through the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), we provide opportunities for students to develop an understanding of the essential concepts, skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable them to be lifelong learners. Our teachers focus on promoting student agency and nurturing our students’ voice and choice. We know that students who engage actively in their learning are also more adaptable, responsible and develop a deeper understanding and love of learning.

We have adopted internationally benchmarked standards in all curriculum areas, including following the Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) standards in mathematics and English language arts.  AERO’s goal is to advance student-driven, learner-centered approaches to education.

Our students study mathematics, English language arts and their units of inquiry with their homeroom teacher, as well as Bangla, music, arts, physical education and an enrichment block with specialist teachers.

Our highly qualified teachers include a number of specialist support staff to ensure our curriculum is accessible across our diverse school community. We offer a wide-ranging extracurricular program that further enriches the social and emotional development of each student. Our teachers are dedicated to promoting students’ welfare, progress, and personal growth and individual interests.

Whether you are a current, or prospective member of our school community, we welcome you to our school!

In the inquiry-based IB classroom, there is emphasis on real-life situations, decision-making, problem solving, research and action. The PYP is underpinned by six units of inquiry, around which learning is planned.
These are:
1. Who we are
2. Where we are in place and time
3. How we express ourselves
4. How the world works
5. How we organize ourselves
6. Sharing the planet

READING AND WRITING PROGRAM

The ‘Readers and Writers Workshop’ at ISD is part of a balanced approach to teaching literacy. Through this reading and writing program, teachers draft work that students drive and become leaders of their own writing. The program progresses from Kindergarten up to Grade 5 with the goal of improving student engagement and reading comprehension. Our students enjoy access to a variety of books, reading choices, devoted time to independent reading, explicit instruction, thoughtful discussions, feedback, and teaching during conferences in Language Arts. These authentic writing experiences help improve student’s writing fluency and quality of writing.

SINGAPORE MATH

At ISD in our Primary School, we implement the Singapore Mathematics based program, delivered within the IB PYP inquiry-based framework, laying a solid foundation of Mathematics skills in a learner-centered and well-balanced learning environment.

The Singapore Math taught at ISD in the PYP from Kindergarten to Grade 5 supports this. Singapore Math is a rigorous math program with a strong history of success, promoting an internationally renowned teaching approach that develops a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking, in students.
