At ISD we offer the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students in Grades 6-10. Through this programme we provide a flexible and balanced curriculum. We ensure that students are prepared for what is to come in the future and endeavor to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to become a lifelong learner.
The five years from age 11 to 16 are a time of rapid growth both physically and mentally. During this time, a young person's social, intellectual and physical needs change regularly and their sense of uniqueness and individuality increases. The IB Middle Years Programme is designed to meet just those needs, providing a broad curriculum which is firmly rooted in the context of the real world and which is accessible to a wide range of learners at different stages of their development. It follows on from the Primary Years Programme and over time provides students with the necessary preparation for the Post 16 Programme at ISD.
The curriculum is designed to be academically challenging, stimulating and creative. Subject learning is always presented to students in the context of its interaction with the real world so that it has meaning. Opportunities abound for learning outside the classroom, for interdisciplinary work and for dynamic inquiry. Students study a broad and balanced range of subjects, acquiring not only content knowledge, skills and conceptual understanding, but also the skills necessary to manage their own learning.
Middle Years Programme students study courses from eight subject areas: English, a mother tongue or second language, humanities, science, mathematics, visual and performing arts, technology and physical education.
In Grades 6-8, students study all three arts subjects (music, visual art and drama) as discrete subjects. In Grades 9 and 10, students opt for one of the arts to study it in more depth.
Students study a general science course from Grades 6 to 9. In Grade 10, students choose to study two of the three main sciences (chemistry, physics and biology).
The MYP curriculum provides for ease of movement between international schools around the world, as well as providing students with opportunities to gain internationally recognized Records of Achievement or the MYP Certificate at the age of 16.
