Overview
The interdisciplinary unit is an integral part of the MYP programme. It is an opportunity for connections to be made between subject areas and give meaning to the world around us. This year ISD chose to incorporate the whole middle school grades 6 - 10 into the project so that they can work together in vertical groupings. Grade 5 was also invited to be part of the project as an introduction to MYP life.
The students were organised into House groups where for two days they analysed and discussed cities in the region of their houses (Everest, Amazon, Sahara, Pacific). The guiding questions for the students were:
How do we build a city?
What is a city made of?
What makes a city good and/or bad?
How and why does change happen in a city?
Each group looked at these questions either from a realist perspective or utopian perspective. Once they had broken down the different aspects of a city in their area : resources, facilities, infrastructure, demographics, they used this information to help them build their own city which they would present as a 'product' at the end of the two-day workshop. The results were creative, knowledgeable and diverse with podcasts, powerpoints, models, informative posters and videos.
These two days have given meaning to our students about the world they live and the responsibility they have for the world of the future; it was a successful event with much food for thought!
